Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat varicose and spider veins on the body. A solution known as sclerosant is injected directly into the unwanted thread veins using a very fine needle. The fineness of the needle ensures that the veins or the surrounding tissue is not punctured.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
A solution called sclerosant is injected directly into the unwanted vein, the solution then displaces the blood within the venule. The wall of the venule is irritated, and swells shut, ultimately sticking together, and dispersing the unwanted vein altogether. The use of an ultra-fine needle ensures that the surround veins and tissues are not punctured – only the unwanted vein is treated.
How many treatments are needed?
Between 2- 6 sessions can be needed, this all depends on the type and size of vein that is being treatment. Each session is 4-6 weeks apart and the veins are best treated within the cooler months. Results can be seen between 2 and 8 weeks post treatment, depending on the vessel treated.
What is the aftercare for the treatment?
We recommend that you purchase compression tights after treatment of leg veins to help to fully close the vein and wearing loose and comfortable clothing to your appointment. Please do not use any moisturisers on your legs on the day of treatment and avoid shaving and applying any form of moisturiser, oil, or product to the area of treatment the day before your appointment. Avoid hot baths and sun exposure post treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
Most clients don’t find the treatment painful, as slight discomfort may be felt when the injection is inserted into the vein.
